8 3/4 third member

I've got a used third member. Looking inside where the axles slide in, the two different sets of splines don't line up (sure grip). Is there any way to get these aligned without tearing it apart?

If the answer is no....to change the gears, is it possible to use a height gauge to measure the existing pinion and shim the new one to match that height? It's a 742 case.
