I pulled my axles today to replace the seals, and on the driver side I noticed this “rift” for lack of better terms. It’s a split, and to me it looks like a casting flaw. First question is, do you guys agree that it’s been there from the beginning, and that it’s from the casting process? Second question, should I be concerned? I really don’t want to have to replace the flange….but I’ll do what I need to do.

Manufacturing flaw.

I have a housing with a similar flaw on the outside
It could be welded up and machined if it bothers you.

Cass at Dr diff said manufacturing flaw. Nothing to worry about.

Thanks guys. That's really what it looked like to me when I saw it, just wanted some expert opinions.

Another question, this one regarding replacing the axle seals, I didn't think silicone was typically used, but you can see that whoever did these the last time used quite a bit. Do I need RTV when I replace the seals?

Many people put a thin film around the outside of the seal before putting it in.

Technically it should not be needed but 50+ years can take it's tole on things.

You shouldnt need anything to seal the outside of the seal to the housing. It might be necessary if the housing is pitted. Otherwise, I just put a thin coat of grease on them to make it easier to push in.
