81 LA, magnum heads, lifter noise

-
Just to make sure there is not a terminology problem I want to verify that you are indeed running Magnum heads 1992 and newer 5.2 and 5.9 heads. The rocker arms are pedestal mounted as apposed to the LA style shift mounted rockers. I assume you 1981 LA motor is either a 318 or 360. I don't know if they had other models in foreign markets.

If it is truly a 1992 or newer Magnum head on an early block then you will need AMC lifters and custom length hollow pushrods to facilitate lubrication of the valve train. If your push rods are solid and or you run a factory style lifter then your valvtrain will starve for oil.

maybe he should check his oil pressure and replace oil pump if necessary. Lifter preload?, I have never seen a problem with that.
