hi fabo's,

i want to swap my 66 cuda from 904 automatic to 4 speed shifter. now i did find a 4 speed 833 trans on ebay from a junkyard company. but i am not sure wheather it's an overdrive one. the yoke is broken also the shifter mounting what i can see on the picture. i have a 360 engine. i think that the bellhous ist for a small block and would fit. but i'm not sure.
can someone tell me more about the 4 speed? i think it should be from 1973.

Looks like an "A" body non OD 4 speed, shifter arms are both pointing up. Broken shifter mount, and yoke, should be easy to find. Make sure you get a 360 balanced flywheel. Get the casting number from the bellhousing and get conversion parts from Brewers Performance to use the 10.5 in clutch and your bellhousing to work in the 66 Cuda. Enjoy!

Are all cranks on 360's drilled for a manual? If not, he should make sure his is drilled correct?

for the first they are good information. but OD would be fine because i am diving a lot on highways with top speed of 80miles. at the moment with 4000rpm's if my stock tachometer indicates right with the electronic ignition.

which year is it? maybe someone have more information to this box.

833 - trans type
4276 assembly date Thursday, April 12, 1973
29xx (how many assembled that day upto (2 digits missing)

C99129 case number typical number
C99126 extension housing -1969-71 A-body with 30 spline output and 307 bearing.

The shift rods are pointing up, OD would have one down. These do not look like they have been off. The bell looks like small block.
The front bearing retainer numbers would be the best to have to definitively tell. but appears to be small which is non OD.

If your wanting MPG go with the OD in my opinion. I ran one for years the only problem was I would get carried away and it wont stand up to abuse like the 833 will. I am running a stroked 340 in a 66 Dart and maybe a little to much abuse.

if i take this non OD in the pictures i have to change my rear ratio to drop my rpm on highways.
i have to disassemble and check the gear box before install them...is it possible to change the gear ratio from the 3rd to an od? or would be this impossible or too expensive and buy the correct one?

If you want the OD, then you need the OD bellhousing or swap the OD gears into a small bearing front housing. You also need the OD shift rods. You have to change the whole gearset. The Mainshaft is different for the OD. That trans looks like it has had a hard life. What rear and gears do you have? Where are you?

Not sure what you can purchase this set up for? OD gear boxes are a LOT cheaper (and easier to find) than an actual 4-spd 833. 4-spd's go in the 4-500 range. OD's in the 2-250 range. The bell housing and shifter/rods is added bonus. Plus add the z-bar mount, fork and boot.
Just the bell (if not broken/repaired)adds another +/-200.
Shift rods 125-150
shifter mech 75- 100

thanks for all your information and feedback.

i live in europe/austria

my formula s have a 9.75 rear. the ratio is unknown. my preowner has build something higher. i have to jack up the rear and count

the seller of the 833 have a $680 buy it know price for what you see in the pics. but i would pay a lot less, unless i don' t know the condition of inside and cases.

They are not difficult to rebuild w/average skill set - brass, bearing and gasket kit cost about $150 USD of course plus shipping to Austria.

It sounds like they want close too all the money for this transmission bundle though.

You might see if someone in your area is going to Carlisle next week and see if you can have it shipped with their purchases. not sure how they do it? group cargo container?
