I have a 74 Duster factory 318/904/8.25
The motor was seized when I bought it and the trans housing had a nasty split in the side.

So for the most part I am left with a rusty roller.

since I am going to strip the car to the unibody and and rebuild it I want a 4 speed trans. I bought a nice 318 with a mild cam and nice head re-work and and a performer intake and a small Holley that's going back in the car when the time comes.

My question is, what rear end gearing was typical for a 74 Duster with a 318 and a 904?

Also, should I look for an overdrive 833 or not?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Rear gear is likely 3.23

BrianT had a complete? conversion for sale on here. It was a 4-spd non OD. Send him a PM

Thanks Rocky. So, not having any knowledge on this subject, if I was to find a non overdrive 833 from early to mid 70's and installed it in my car with a stock 3.23 rear, about how man RPM will the motor be turning at 65 MPH with stock 14" wheels and tires?
And how is first gear going to feel?

tire height will make a difference, but with a 26" tall tire I'd guess around 27 to 2,800 rpm +/-. The final drive ratio is still 1:1. If you have an auto in it now it should be about the same in 4th gear.
