883 leaking

OK on 883 in my 72 dart I seem to have a leak that I can not locate. The leak appears to be coming from somewhere around the front bearing retainer as there was some trans oil on the throw out bearing by the clutch fork. I have pulled the Trans and replaced the seal and gasket for the bearing retainer but it is still leaking. I am currently using synchro mesh fluid, should I drain this and go to 80-90 weight gear oil and see what happens or am I possibly looking at a hairline Crack in the retainer. Thanks
 
Lotta retainers get damaged when a new front bearing is installed using the snap ring that comes on the new bearing.
That new snap ring has a larger outside diameter than the original trans snapring, and doesn't allow the retainer to fit correctly to the case, and if overtightened, does stress and may cause cracks on the retainer.
There's an earlier post that gives measurements, or @Brewers may respond if they see this.
 
I did the rebuild on this myself using the kit from.brewers and the book from my passion so hopefully that isn't the issue .
 
Not having the bell housing dial indicated to the crank will sometimes cause the the retainer seal to leak due to side pressure from the input being cocked in the retainer .

Or the cluster shaft was not sealed at the end of the case. When installing the cluster shaft and it starts to enter the front of the case . Dry up the hole and end of the shaft with brake clean and apply some hondabond before putting it in the rest of the way.
 

I rebuilt my A833 transmission and it shifted fine but it had a leak just the one that you are talking about. Mine was the vent one the top of the trans. It was locked down which would make any pressure inside the trans to escape from the hole in the front of the unit.
Just saying that you might have a problem with the vent hole.

I did do research on that about the vent tube and found that can cause leaks. I did not replace mine so that is going to be my next step,
 
It's common for the cast retainers to crack through the edge of the bolt hole if they have been overtightened. Not always evident when it's not clamped down.
Seal in backwards?
Did you use sealant under the head of the bolts?
Seal area on the input pitted, or have a groove worn into the shaft?

Seal in backwards? No, I put the seal in so that I could see the spring with the bearing side facing up.
Did you use sealant under the head of the bolts? I did not, the oil appears to be coming out of the end over the input shaft as there is lube dripping off the throwout bearing.

Could a bad vent tube be the culprit?
