Hi there!

This winter I wish to get my 8-3/4 under my 1964 Dart.

Car gets a 440 and will never again be street legal here in Germany.
Because the 9" drum brakes are light and in very good condition I want to stay with them.

What I know is that 8-1/4 and 8-3/4 axles use the same backing plates.
What I heard is that 80th Dakotas and Durangos have 9" drums and 8-1/4 axles.
What I will not have here is a junkyard with these cars to find these plates....

Has anybody any idea about this swap or partsnumbers or even better the parts?

Thank you! This will be a thrilling winter!

Well 1st, IIRC, 8.75 housings are 5 bolt backing plates, and the 9 inch brakes all have 4 bolt backing plates.
And 2nd,those 9inchers are good for about 30mph/50kms.If you are putting in a 440, those teensy, weensy brakes could get you killed.
That car needs some serious brakes.Lightness be hanged.Discs on front and at least 10 inchers on the rear. Why would you risk your life like that? or your passengers?

Thank you, but as I understand, the 8-1/4 has the same 5-bolt backing plate as the 8-3/4. And there were Mopars with 8-1/4 and 9" rear drums out there.

The other thing is that my Dart was very fine with its 9" drums. Even at the German Autobahn and more than 55 mph :D It had a strong running 318 in and stopped very well.

New situation is that it will never be street driven again. So we don't have to worry about passengers lifes.
