Does it even try to shift? If it goes 1st...2nd...2nd & 1/2... Your front clutches are toast. If it doesn't even try, it may be some crud in the valvebody. I had a Diplomat that did that to me. I found that if would get up to 70 or so, floor it and "flash" the selector through reverse, it would hold 3rd. Basically I was causing a massive spike in line pressure. NOT that I am advising such a drastic measure. In the end, I dumped 2 bottles of STP into the trans and sold it for $1000.
