m diving into my first 904 rebuild and have hit a problem. I have the case completely stripped except for the low/reverse drum and output shaft. I pulled the pump and all input shaft pieces. Rear planetary is out. Band and the bracket is out. There was a decent size snap ring inside the low drum, on the inside part of the output support. I removed that snap ring and thought the drum should have just slid off the rear support and out, but it won’t. It will rotate one direction and move in/out about 1/8”, enough to cover the snap ring grove, but not come out.

This is a 4x4 904. The tail housing, governor, and parking pawl are off. As it sits the output shaft will not rotate or pull out the back of the case. I assume it should rotate and everything I’ve seen makes me believe the shaft could just pull out.

Thanks in advance.

This is out of a 01 Jeep that “went into limp mode”. I found a broken/collapsed accumulator that was probably the original problem, but it was left outside after being replaced. Other drums have surface rust but this one is clean. PB blaster overnight and a couple kisses from a brass drift hasn’t gained me anything.

Sound like it need to increase the percussive maintenance.

In the tail section there is the parking latch & gear that will hold the output too. Should a YouTube on it.
