Hi Guys,

today i started to overhaul my brothers 904 trans. It´s a 904 or 998, from 1974 as far as i know, it has got 4 pinion aluminium planetaries. I started putting together the planetary gear train to check endplay, unfortunately there are not the right thrust washers in the new kit. The used ones in the trans do have 4 tangs as the ones in the new kit, but the old ones have a bigger diameter of the tangs....the new ones do not fit into the planetaries.

I checked several vendors regarding these thrust washers, the kits i found pics of do not have these washers our trans has got. Makco for example lists a kit from 60-77 and one from 78 up. It seems that both kits do not have the washers i need......i need two washers for the planetary gear train where the tangs are not within the outside diameter, the tangs are around 1/10th of an inch outside of the outer diameter of the washer....i´ll try to ad some pics later this week when i´m at my brothers place again.

Anybody knows a source for these thrust washers? What could be wrong?

Thanks for info!

Michael

Sounds like you got thrust washers for steel planetaries. Aluminum thrust washers, even if it has the same amount of pinions have the tangs located differently compared to steel planets. I ran into the exact opposite problem last year when I received washers for aluminum planets but needed them for steel planets. I got the correct ones from www.wittrans.com and suggest you think long and hard before doing business with Bulkpart. If the parts they send you do not fit or are junk (even if their new in the box) they will not refund your money, they'll just give you a credit for the next time you order with them. Ask me how I know!

BTW: don't trust pictures places load on their website. A lot of the time it's just an example picture, not the real item you'll receive

Yep. Hit the nail right on the head Tracey.
Michel, You have thrust washers for the 4 pinion steel planetaries. Like Tracey says, you need the ones for aluminium gears.
I've just ordered a set from A&A. PN 12915A. Bit of a bummer really because you have to disassemble the trans before you can order stuff in order to get the right parts. Which leaves the trans in a million pieces for about 2 weeks while you wait for delivery.
Been there, done that.
Cheers. Gaz

Hey guys, thanks all for the quick replies!

I attached a picture from the washer i need. Outer diameter is 2.78", inner diameter is 2". Should be the ones Tony mentioned. Gaz, is it possible to compare the pic to the one you got from A&A? Just wanna be 100% sure...;-)

Thanks again, another lesson learned!

Still waiting for delivery Michel. Should be here late next week. I will let you know & PN you with a pic.

yeah, I've run into the same problem when getting washers from Mako , bulkpart , and the other resellers. Some list a size and when you get the parts they are not the sizes listed. I just got mine from Cope trans in the end but I'd say A&A would be on the ball as well.
