Looking at using a 63 B body rear in my 68 dart.Had a 70 8 3/4 installed with perches moved to 43 c/c with 11 x 2 1/2 drums,(running 17 x 8 bullit rims with 5.72 b/s &245 45 17 tires) way to close to the quarter lip even after trimming the quarter.I have 1 1/2 on one side and 1 3/8 on the other to the leaf springs.Am I correct with my measurements that the 63 B body rear is 58 1/2 flange to flange vs 60 1/8 for the 70 B body rearend. Also will the Dr Diff axles with green bearings fit into the housing ends (63 used the retainer nut type axles) If my calculations are correct it should move my tires inboard 3/4 per side(towards leaf springs) Any info would be great
thnx mike

I believe the older 8-3/4 are tapered axles so the newer axles/bearings will not work. The (66) and older 8-3/4 are narrower but I can't remember off top by how much. Someone will chime in.

I talked to Dr.Diff about this at the MATS show a few weeks ago. He said the housing ends are the same but the studs are shorter and need to be replaced to use the non tapered aftermarket axles. He has the studs. Don't know what brakes you plan using but the 63 backing plates are different. If reusing the 10x2 1/2 shoes/drum use the 65 up backing plates.
The chart I have shows 62-70 8 3/4 B body flange to flange is 55.000 compared to the A body 8 3/4 at 51.400.
I have seen these specs to be + or - do to manufacturing tolarences.
This chart was printed in Mopar Muscle Mag years ago,,, Values ?

Have you experimented with and/or measured for backspacing? You might be able to cure your issue with different wheels.

hey Bad Sport thanks for the imput.I'm set on my wheel combo 5.72 backspace 17 x 8 rim with a 245 45 17 tire.Based on the numbers you provided the 63 B body rear would be roughly 1 5/8 narrower than a 68-70 B body rear. This should pull the tires away from the quarter by 3/4 "on each side.I had 1 1/2 to the leaf spring with the 70 B body rear with the above mentioned tire combo. Also Darter6 I'm going to run the Dr Diff 11.7 rear disc setup.
thanks
