A999 tranny same as 904?

find a 89-91 518 that has 2 pins in the connector. it is not lockup. my 91 truck, 318 tbi had 1. then you can use reg 727 style non lockup conv.
Do you happen to know how many pins the lock-up version would have? Just trying to determine how to spot one of these in junk yard. Thank you!

Thanks rbkt65. Unfortunately the 518 I currently have is a 3 pin lock-up so limited on converters. I assume same deal on the A500.

only 2 pins in the oval connector. 89-91 d150/250 trucks and possibly 89-91 dakota with a500 could be 2 pin.

A518/46RH has oval connector as well. 3 pins for lock-up. Not sure of year on this one but I believe it is a 91. At a quick glance pan shape will distinguish A500 A904 based vs A518 727 based transmission.

V6 or v8 dodge is same bolt pattern. But jeep v8 has starter on opposite side. Might still work, but ?????

I've never had much luck with 904s, 998, 999s.....
I've had much better luck with them after the 904 series trans is scrapped and a 727 is in its place. I don't race, just drive them daily/ and 904s seem to wear out on me, what I'd call prematurely..... The best one I had was the one in my 87 B250 van.

Unless you're building a strip or street/strip car why wouldn't you want to keep the lockup converter for better MPG?
The 904/999 lockups had issues with torque converter shudder and eventually failure when they came out in late 70's. I would assume they have a better converter clutch design/material now since they are the same as the A500 od trans.

Fellas, Got my 999 (TF-6) out of a 1984 D150 with a 318 in the 84 truck. The 999 from my understanding was Chryslers answer to the Ford AOD. Had mine rebuilt and have some 17K miles on it all in a 1991 D150 frame under my Project 53. Not knocking anyone's abilities or /Knowledge. Great transmission but you have to have the correct crossmember (out of 84 truck ) to get it to fit correctly in my 91 chassis. The 999 gives you the sensation its shifting 4 times but it is not....When the lock up comes in it drops the rpm several hundred RPM overall. I am running a trans cooler up in front of the radiator for the shear fact that I live in South Texas and want my tranny to hold up. Mine is coupled to a 318 all in Project 53.

The A-999 is a great transmission. The differences from a standard 904 are as follows..... 5 disc direct drum, 4 disc forward drum, 4 pinion planetaries instead of 3, and a lower 1st gearset. Some will argue that the 999 also came with a 4 disc direct drum, but they did not. If it has a 4 disc direct drum it is an a-998. All exterior dimensions are the same and all linkages will interchange.
Every 999 I have seen has a lockup torque converter as well with an input shaft of a different spline count.
