Anyone run a Accel Super Coil, the big yellow square shaped one? Are they a good performance coil? I want to run one in my 340 cause I love the vintage look of it but not sure if I should or not. I am running a MSD 6al box with a MSD Blaster 2 coil, MP performance dizzy with Accel 8.8 plug wires. What I have works great, just like the old yellow coil. Does it hurt to mix "brands" on the ignition or should I stay with the MSD? Thanks!

Mix all you want, but some MSD stuff is race only, some has impedence built in. Those Yellow coils are not the best. I see 'em at swap meets by the box full, literally, the guy has milk crates full of super coils and more boxes full of Accel plug wires. I dont know who he is, but I think he gets all the Accel returns or open box or blems. Most of the boxes if any are thrashed. I like Mallory, but choice is yours.

Lets compare specs.

First the MSD 2

Output volts- 45,000
Output milliamps- 140
Spark duration- 350 microseconds

Accel

Output volts- 45,000
Output milliamps- 300
Spark duration- 400 microseconds

After looking at the specs that old Accel coil doesn't look so bad. All these specs I got right out of the Summit catalog.

Here's the only clincher, what did the person doing the testing use to fire them. If it were the same ignition box the Accel would be the winner hands down. I guess that part we'll never know.

Oh yeah, as to your question of does it hurt to mix stuff. It can. Some coils are designed for CD ignition only. Others are not to be used with a CD ignition. Others are race only (as Pishta mentioned). You need to pick and choose carefully but I can tell you it doesn't hurt to run the big yellow Accel coil with a MSD box cause I ran one for quite a while with no issues.
