is there a aftermarket mechanical temp gauge that would work on a stock factory 2 barrel 318 manifold? or would only a electric one work?

You can use either a electric aftermarket one or a mechanical aftermarket one. It is just a different sender.

You can use the same sender location your current guage is using (by swapping in the new), or find another cooling port in the manifold and use both (current and aftermarket)

Any aftermarket mechanical temp gauge should come with adapters to fit most manifolds. If you are talking about using your stock sending unit, then you would need an electric gauge.

okay cool its cause i bought a mechanical one and it would not screw in into my manifold the size is different.

You can get adapters. At least some of them are specific to the brand of the gauge. Smallest I know of is 3/8 pipe thread, which is about 5/8" OD

I have two sets of aftermarket mechanical gauge adapters that fit about every type sender there is if they can help.
Can you post a pic of your capillary unit with a ruler or tape measure next to it?
I know what the 318 intake needs for the OD, but I don't know what ID your stuff needs.
