Again; ammeter bypass

I've got a 72 swinger ,340, with original wiring harness. If I install new wire with fuse from the alternator output to the battery stud of the starter relay,do I also leave the original wire on the alternator output ? Can one simply cut the original ammeter wires before going through the bulkhead and splice together under the hood or are there other accessories which are spliced into these wires ?
