Alternator questions

Yup that Cheby alternator probably works ok but it sure looks out of place on a Mopar. The output wire going directly to the battery is correct but I'd use a fuseable link in series with it just in case the alternator shorts to ground.

I agree with mullinax95; run a later model Mopar square back alternator with the proper regulator and all will be ok. Good luck

You mean like this :

Yes and no. The fusible link needs to be at the end, as in by the battery. It also should be 2 sizes smaller than the gauge wire you are running. I.E. If you run an 8 gauge wire like I did, I used a 12 gauge fusible link.

See the blue wire at the starter relay? I didn't get a closer pic.

I see what you're saying there. This is how it came to me from New Mexico, pretty soon, all hell will break loose(controlled, btw) and the restore will commence. While the engine is out, I will address cleaning up the wiring, and doing what needs done, would really like to get the GM alternator out and put in a decent Mopar unit, something a little heftier than stock, as I plan to upgrade to electronic ignition, among other things!!!

Do yourself a favor and buy a new engine/forward light harness while the engine is out. They cost about 219.00. Then upgrade the wiring on the bench for the new style voltage regulator and square back alternator and that willbe just fine for electronic ignition. THey sell one modded for elec. ing. but I don't like the 4 prong ballast resistors.

I would say unless you are going for a 100 point resto just leave the chevy alt on there! One of the 2 best upgrades I did to any of my mopar daily drivers was the gauge bypass and throwing on a chevy alternator! I got way better charge at idle and for the most part you have a better chance of getting a working chevy alt right out of the box than you do finding a working mopar alt right out of the box. My record was 8 dead mopar alts in a row from the same store. It was either the brushes on the remaned ones or the bearing on the new ones. After the 8th and last one in the store I asked for a chevy alt and it worked great!
