  1. My 15 year old made a passing mention of wanting a cowboy hat last night during the thunder storm. So...I'm gonna suprise him one for Christmas. Looking on shopgoodwill.com for a half gag gift (he looks like a surfer: blond 70s hair, plays football..never riden a horse) and i see various styles with brim widths. I dont want an Indiana Jones hat, nor a Garth Brooks sombrero...something in the middle?
  2. What colors are 'in' nowadays? I thought white was pretty neutral, but i see tan and black. Suede or traditional fiber? Saw a mix of both at the last PBR event we went to although the hardcore ropers usually had the larger brimmed dark ones that sorta drooped? Educate me on Stetsons!

The wife likes the guy called "Rip" on Yellowstone. He wears a black hat.

I have many hats. A few western hats. The one I wear most is a CHEAP pork pie I found at Roses for like 4 bucks. lol I do NOT wear ball caps. Stetson still makes a good hat. RedHead makes a good one. Bass Pro carries RedHeads.

I used to wear one all the time but not anymore. I have a picture of me on graduation day with my cowboy hat on and my graduation hat on top of it lol I was a silly redneck.

I like the top one. I think women's have a more of a curve in the back where men's are more pointed down but im not expert

Come drive around Norco for a bit you’ll get all the cowboy hat information you’d ever thought you’d want. I’ll buy lunch.

I dont wear one, never have, but black is the way to go.

I can't wear hats (except soft floppy ones) because my head shape is more oval than round and the brim of the hat presses too hard on my forehead while the headband has a gap near the ears (results in headaches and/or painful pimple outbreak on the forehead).

I have seen a precision gauge before that has many movable pins that will measure not only the size of your hat, but the exact shape. Making a custom hat based on the measurements of such a gauge would be the only possible way of me being able to wear a hat comfortably (looked for a photo of the measuring device on the internet, but no luck on finding the instrument I mentioned).

There are mechanisms out there whose entire existence is aimed at stretching cowboy hats in the proper directions to fit your head.

there are two real things that make a cowboy hate, the brim and the crown (dip and pinch)

i wear one from time to time, with a 3 inch wide rim and a teardrop pinch

i feel that one does best for me as far as matching my head

oh, crown too is very important, crown is how tall the hat is, it needs to be just about your head and it seems to me too many of them are too tall and look goofy (to me)

i guess you should also consider wool felt or straw
it almost sounds like straw would fit your boy the best

Quality costs some $$$ even the straws. A good straw is $60 or so. A decent felt, that is a beaver/rabbit mix (not wool) is several hundred and up. Resistol and American, and yes Stetson still makes hats and was bought out by ?
Felt for winter straw for summer, and yes some old time working cowboys never wear a straw, ever.
The shape depicts the part of the country you are from and the type of work/activity you do.
And sorry straws have a sorry sweat ban..dead givaway.

During the 70's I wore western wear while trucking.

Bought a custom made wide brimmed Resistol at a tack shop in Wichita. Got stolen out of my Kenworth outside the Palimino Club on Route 66 in Armadillo, TX.

Maybe the Texas poontang was worth it....
