I have a 68 intake manifold on my 67 383. Just curious what the 5 X 1 means in the casting date area means. Never seen one like this before. The 383 in my 67 Barracuda is the original motor. I've talked to two previous owners and they didn't replace anything. The motor has large valve 915 cylinder heads as well. This might actually be the last 383 Barracuda built but I haven't confirmed it yet. Just trying so see if this code means anything special. Maybe preproduction????

Pictures may help get what you want.

Hi!
2806301 is the castnumber for 1969 383 1x4bbl fitting A, B and C body. I can see the 5 which would be the day but I cant see the month after. Ulf

68-69 Intake. I would check the casting date on the block and heads. I would also look for a vin stamp or any other numbers.

Lots of things can happen over 40 years.

67 doesn't have vin numbers. Block is correct and date on heads make them possible as well. But the intake I'm not sure of. The way they did the casting date on the intake doesn't make any sense to me

2205968 is the casting # for 62-67 383 4bbl intake
2806301 is the casting # for 68-69 383 4bbl's
Typically, castng dates on intake and exhaust manifolds are in a MO/DY/YR and are pretty obvious. The 5 would be May, X might be a badly cast 7, and by deduction, the last number should only be an 8 or 9. Take a VERY close look at it. I'm not sure if May of 1967 is plausible as a late production change for an intake manifold part #. Such as 5 7 7 on your manifold. But, could be. What is your engine assembly date? (on the front passenger side of the block)

My engine was built May 23rd 67. My car was built June 9th

So it looks like that casting date should be 5 7 7, pretty early for a 68 style intake. I checked a 383 I have, it's a 66 that has the 2205968 intake dated only with month and day. Manifold date is 10 14, the engine assembly is 10 15. I also have a 69 383 HP engine that is a late (7-69) build that has the 70 style intake on it, dates correspond with engine assembly date.

Ok took another look. It does say 5 X 1 This tag looks odd to me for some reason. Almost looks like a temporary application to the mold.

Your intake is probably just an early part, since a change was coming for 1968. Next step would be to look at some other intakes, with same casting #, and look at date codes... might be able to see when this change originated. No idea why the odd date, likely just the foundry production code at early stage for the new casting.

Want to bring this back up to see if someone else might know

I would say it's for a 1968 383x4 car or a 1969 car. The intake was casted in May and if the day was 1st or 7th does not matter in case of numbers matching. For numbers matching six days would not matter at all. Since the intake is casted in May it was mounted on a car from late May until early August which also makes it possible for a 1970 early build car.
