I read where some one filtered it on Initial fire up and I thought, why not do it before. The same way we flush p/s units. Run the pump on a ratchet wrench and put some type of filter in the system. Or just run some water on the ground through the system.

Filter is used because the old caustic hot tanks no longer exist... The dish washers & bake ovens work okay, the shot blast makes everything it can get to spotless, but the cooling system has lots of areas shot blast can't effectively clean... The bake oven will loosen stuff but it doesn't dislodge it... Flush it with a pressure washer all you want but some stuff will still remain... So when you fill the cooling system it won't dislodge anything, but a few heat cycles & stuff starts floating around... If you have a filter in the upper radiator hose the filter will catch it & in my experience you will have to clean that filter 3-4 times before things settle down... If you don't have a filter in the upper radiator hose the debris will go straight to the radiator were it will plug up a fair percentage of the radiator core....

The above scenario is a fresh engine after a rebuild... If you are talking about an old engine with a new radiator I would flush the block before installing a radiator, remove the thermostat & flush from the top & out the bottom... Depending on how dirty the system is I often knock out a few freeze plugs to allow heavy debris to escape the lower areas of the cooling system & yes, I put my filter of the system till it stays clean...

The filter I use..

I have to wonder if this is one of the reasons we see so many over heating complaints in this discussion forum.

I’m using this with my new U.S. Radiator.

I'm shocked... By now there's usually a few posts saying what a waste of time adding a filter is...

I installed one before my heater core too, you never know.
