Shredded another PS/fan belt today. Can anybody recommend a good one?

And see......here's the thing. YOUR Gates belt above shows to be 3/8" wide. So it should fit better. It doesn't.
Yeah its fatter then its supposed to be sticking out not engaging pulleys like it should. And it sticks out on water pump and crank pulley the same way

Get us a picture of that belt eater.
Pictures of pulley alignment etc may be helpful.
Here's a video of it running:

Also a pic of where the new AutoZone belt is tensioned, with where yesterday's NAPA or RockAuto was tensioned:

The previous belt was thin, smooth, and sat down in the groove well. It just kept stretching until it broke.

Solid mount fan?

My '74 Dart Swinger had a 7 blade solid mount fan, noisy like an airplane prop.

Clutch fan setup will probably be easier on the fan belt.

Slant 6 or small block setup?

Mine has a 5-blade, no clutch, on a 318.

OK, that solid mount fan can work that belt. Trying to spin it up, and trying to slow it down.

The clutch fans are more like an automatic transmission, less stress on the belt.

Your missing the spacer bushing on the power steering bolt . That will make the pump go out of alignment under torque That's your problem. If you need the spacer bushing I have them. I am in Pa. You will need to pay the shipping

The only thing I can add is a 15450 belt is 15…450 45”s long. A 15455 is 45 1/2”s long. My power steering was wider too.

Yup, the P/s belt has always been wider than the alt belt. Alt belt numbers as above post. I can’t remember the P/s belt numbers. Kim

Most standard V belts are 40 degree section. Narrower at top = narrower at bottom. We have a place to use a 1/2 drive pull bar at power steering pump. So we might pull a more narrow belt to the bottom of the sheath. There is no drive down there. Just causes the sides to slip. It wouldn't get any better if we put our brother on that pull bar.
Todays metric dimensions change things a tad also. Same as our original E size tire lands between today's 195 and 205 (I think,, was too long ago). Anyway,,, belt standing just a little tall in the saddle shouldn't cause premature failure. Yes we loose a tad of depth too but won't reach the bottom. Again, mature is 3 to 4 years.
My 273 was last ran Aug 2022. If I pull that ps belt today (hardly used since install) and tossed it in the floor it would lay in nearly the same shape it was held for so long. A canvas belt doesn't play like a chain. So,, new belts is part of our prep for sale. Carry on

Exactly , V Belts are driven on the sides not the bottom. If the belt is to low in the Sheath and riding on bottom the belt will slip or be thrown off. The belt in this case is either of wrong size/ type or the Sheath is worn.

Autozone belts will work good I have them on my car and truck And no problems over the miles
I run autozone belts also. never had an issue. My Duster with a 100 amp one wire alternator @ 8000 rpms would destroy a belt in one 1/4 mile run if I didn't shut the alternator off. If the belt is trying to turn something that is holding back for what ever reason they will self destruct. Belt to tight , alternator or pump bearing bad. Any type of significant drag will destroy a belt.

Something is not right pulley alignment, belt to wide for the pulley, pulleys not equal width. or something turning too hard or binding

Hate to sound like a broken record but it's probably an alignment issue and not a belt issue.

Up near the top of the page, Oldmanmopar noticed that my car was missing the spacer bushing that goes in the power steering bracket. He suspected that was allowing the bracket to flex under torque, breaking the belt. He sent me a bushing which I've installed.

I drove the car back to the storage unit last night, stopping to fill the tank along the way. The squeal I used to hear under acceleration was gone. I thought it was coming from the transmission, but it could have been the PS/fan/water pump belt.
