Anyone know about function generators? Need advice.

I need a function generator that I can amplitude modulate a low frequency (Hz) signal as a carried signal by the generator.

I tried using an old analog 49Mhz baby monitor by pulsing a signal directly to the speaker input. That worked for about an hour.

I only need to send the signal no more than five feet.

Any suggestions?
