Stumbled across this on FB today, read the comments, and I was amazed at the different answers, and the reasons for same.

So I thought I'd throw it out here and see what happens!

IMHO.

A short to ground at Y would fry the wires dragging the B+ to 1.5v

If the starter motor were bad meaning open there would not be any voltage drop.

If it were bad meaning shorted I still don't see a battery going to 1.5v

High resistance at X would prevent the relay from energizing.

So the likely cause would be high resistance at W

Final answer A.

Ya treed me. lol

Did the mechanic confirm B+ wasn't dropping to 1.5 volts first? If so, it's A - there's a bad connection at W not delivering enough juice for the solenoid.
