Auto-Train History

Amtrak still operates the Auto Train between Sanford (Orlando) FL and just outside Washington DC.

I've looked into it a few times but it's always more expensive than renting a car and paying for a couple nights in a decent hotel rooms along the way.

...and it's a LOT more expensive than flying.

Too bad, as I'm a fairly serious railfan.

I was witness to a freight train derailment circa 1988 in El Paso, Texas, while patrolling the international border as a Border Patrol Agent. It was a train we decided not to inspect for illegal aliens which carried some tanker cars. It was an extremely hot summer day. Don't know what caused the derailment, but it was on the side of a hill on a curve. My partner and I must have noticed it before the engineer even had a clue.
