When I took my Valiant in for repair, I asked to see if they could diagnose a bumping sound in the back of the car. The mechanic showed me that the axle moved too freely. My question is; Is it safe to drive with an axle differential problem? I guessing that if that is the problem, I am looking at a costly repair and may have to wait to get the money for it. Thanks in advance for all your help.

Fix it yourself man, I figure your asking here for a reason, plenty of resources here, these cars are too old to have someone else repair it, it isn't cost effective.
Does the rear end go 'BANG!' When you go from reverse to forward? I'd say pop off the diff cover with a catch pan under it and look for metal flakes in the oil, and any wear in the gears with a light, go from there.
