From a BBP 7.25, going to use on my 8.75. I cleaned up the first backing plate and noticed these patterns in the pads where the shoes contact and ride. Is this normal, or are they supposed to be smooth? If to be smooth, can I just lightly grind flat?

Yes, the pictured pattern is normal and was made that way at the factory to provide a better rubbing surface with the shoes to help prevent binding.

Adding a little bit of brake grease to the backing plate pads was recommended by Chrysler and helps as well. The following image shows the Mopar product:

i personally don't think that's enough wear to worry about. give it a dab of brake grease on reassembly and send it.

Thanks. After I did the other one, I see how is worn in the centers some, but the full "bars" are supposed to be there.
