Bad harmonic balancer

400 big block has a knocking noise in the front someplace. When I treid to set the timing it jumped all over the place so that indicated the balancer is bad. I removed the belt and the noise went away changed the water pump and pullies still had the knock so it has to be the balancer. I've seen the timing problem before but never the noise ordered new balancer and will know Tuesday evening for sure

Don't run it anymore. Sounds like you found the problem before it tore all creation up.

Never met a dampener I trusted. Always checking for top dead center.

I bought a motor and the oem one was "spun" 70 degrees!
