In preparation for the G31 mod (for my pick-up) I will be doing soon, I borrowed a charger and hooked it up to freshen these monsters (group 31 batteries).
This is what I measured,

On the 2 amp setting the voltage was 15.44 VDC

On the 10 amp setting it was 16.26 VDC and rising.

Shouldn't it be 14.60 or so?

Is this right? I do not hear the batteries boiling.

I suspect the charger is malfunctioning, I don't want to damage these batteries.

Thanks in advance,

Battery chargers are generally NOT voltage regulated. A typical 10A charger may "go anywhere" from pegging the meter and repeatedly tripping the internal breaker---on a nearly dead, WARM battery --to dropping off some amperage when the battery is up, BUT will then proceed to ovecharge and boil the battery with lots of overvoltage.

You have to use your noggin

Never charge a frozen battery without thawing

A COLD dead battery will take very little current at first

A WARM dead battery will "really suck" the current

As I said, most chargers are not regulated, and only "drop off" amperage "as a matter of luck." they MUST put out overvoltage to cause a charge to happen, the obvious problem is that most are not regulated.

So as the battery "comes up" you just have to watch it.

Many regulated chargers are very little better---they use minimal cheap components to accomplish regulation, are subject to failure

What kind of batteries are they? Standard water/acid refillable or AGM (Absorbed Glass Matt)?
