BB from SB 727 ID?

how do you tell whether a 727 is for smallblock or bigblock? I know the bell pattern is diff but are there any other spotters' tricks? Is there a serial number decoder somewhere to help?

Look just above the starter pocket. Yes, the marks are very hard to see unless the area is clean

A-727-A is small block
A-727-B is big block

............ez way............bb has 4 1/4 in bolts holding on the inspection cover..........sb will have 2 7/16 bolts 4 the tork straps..............kim........

I also identify them like Kim does. If there's 4 quarter inch bolt holes right along the bottom it's a big block trans.
