Body trim question

Just curious, but why do some 1970's Darts have trim below the doors on each side and some don't? Was it an option? Mine are a little dinged up and don't know if to replace them or remove at some point. I don't really see replacements online except for strips of glue on stuff.
Opinions? I think some look good with it, but some without. Thanks!
