For clarity. I will NOT use NOS. Now that that's out of the way..... the question:
Will a bottom dollar 440 out run the 5.9 in our '80 D150. In other words, can I do a max of 500 bucks into the 440 and out run the 5.9 numbers.
  • 440 is an RV engine.
  • I have 2 intakes, a single plane torker or the factory cast.
  • I have 2 sets of heads. 452's freshly done or 906 that look to be freshly done
  • So the money would be spent on the cam/lifters.
the 5.9 numbers are 12.91 in the 1/4. 8.15 in the 1/8. 1.78 60 ft. on a warm/humid day
the 5.9 is 200,000 mile motor with an oregon regrind cam and 4bbl.

Posting this because I'm thinking of winter project. Trying to make decisions.
I already have the BB tranny, mounts, and headers.

truck has 29x9 slicks, 4.30 gear, and a hughes off the shelf converter.

A hydraulic cam cut to Mopar 528 specs, single plane, 750 DP, headers and mildly ported head should eclipse 12.9 easily

If you do nothing to the dismal compression ratio of the 440 (IE put a different piston in it and bring em up to zero deck) it will have no chance against the 5.9. The best Ive seen from stock bottom motorhome 440s without boost is upper 12s in an A body. In a truck, I’m saying mid/high 13s.

If it were me and I already had all of those parts, I would definitely do the 440 with a modern cam grind and let it rip. You already have excellent numbers from the 5.9 Magnum. You already have most of the parts for the comparison. And, you have a youtube channel where we can watch the build and results as you go. Everybody wins. And I think the 440 will win in that scenario too just because the heads will move more air. But, only one way to find out.

Whichever way you go, I approve and I will watch the videos. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Seems like I’ve read somewhere the stock 452/906 heads are 210-215 cfm stock. Magnums I find everything from 210-230 stock. That tells me they’re close.

452's, try DP first but maybe with the gear the SP will run better, pocket port the heads, headers and at least a 3310 Holley. oh yeah, 509 cam and related parts
5.9 has a 750 double pumper, so that would be the carb I'd use. I have headers as well.

Could be.... and I'm certainly not interested in a step backwards!! LOL

Thanks!

I do like @Bobzilla idea of a video series comparing the two though. And I’d definitely be on board with that.
yeah, I want the truck to go faster. I don't want all my fun money to go to the truck. Look'n for a cheap & easy way to knock the ET down (aren't we all??? LOL)
Thus... the brainstorming :realcrazy: :realcrazy:

Here's IQ52's build up of a low CR 440

Dyno testing a stock(?) 1972 440

I think he bored .040 over ?? If I was to "build" the 440, then I'd change pistons and do some things to make power. I really at this point just looking at trying to knock the ET with what I have. I have everything but the cam. I thought with the RV the whiplash cam might be the best choice?? But usually, whiplash/thumper cams are not my choice.

Doing a little something more with the 5.9 is still on the table as well. I'd just like to put an idea or plan and have a chance at lowering the ET without spending much

Depends, a low CR 440 seem to make about as much torque above 3,000 rpms as a decent 360, below 3,000 rpm a 360 doesn't compare. What's the hp goals ?, Over 400 hp I'd say 440, 350-400 hp with the right gear and stall I would think they would be similar.

I have no horsepower goal... I have a "lower the ET goal" LOL
