Brake drum weights on a 64 Dart??

I just took off a set of steel rims with hubcaps and put on a set of CragarS/S's. The rims were hitting weights on the drums which made the wheels wobble a bit. I took the rims off and ground down the spots that were hitting. Are these weights really necessary? I've never noticed them on any of my other cars before (but that doesn't mean that they weren't there)Tomorrow, I'm gonna wire brush and paint the sides of the drums..Will grinding them off completely create problems?

Yes they are. Not all need weights, depends on how well they were cast/machined. It's possible you might create vibration if you remove some really big weights.
