I'm wondering what's the purpose of using a brass feeler gauge when setting the gap on the reluctor in a mopar electronic ignition system. I'm guessing it has something to do with it being non-magnetic but why can't you use a standard stepper feeler gauge?

It needs to be non-magnetic for a couple of reasons. One is that it just makes it tough to get a good 'feel.' The other is that you are liable to pickup/ transfer little bits of junk (magnetic) to the pickup.

A steel feeler gage can transfer magnetism from the pickup coil to the spoke of the reluctor wheel and cause it to become magnetised. If an individual spoke has magnetism, it can affect the point at which that spoke triggers the ignition. brass feeler gages won't transfer magnetism.
