Hi was wondering what your thoughts were on vinyl trunk stripe. should you apply stripes before final clearcoat or after final coat? Thoughts please :thankyou:

That is a good question, I am getting ready to paint my car and will be replacing the original bumblebee stripe. My car currently has the original stripe on it and as you probably know the factory put it on after the paint job because it is acrylic enamel with no clear. I am putting my stripe on over the clear but and I'm curious to other people's opinion.

Im wondering if there might be a reaction between the clear and the vinyl? If not i think it would protect the vinyl?

I can answer this with complete certainty. AFTER the clearcoat and at least 30 days after all the paint is done. I have a 1983 Rampage 2.2. It came with factory vinyl stripes from front to back. At some point the previous owner had some minor bodywork done all on the drivers side. To help it blend in, the Paint shop clearcoated the whole side of the car over the stripes. 95% of the clearcoat on the stripes separated and peeled off leaving a car that looks like it has leprosy. The other side looks great. Don't do it!

The paint off-gasses for some time after the paint job is done, so you don't want to put the stripes on until after that process is done. The stripes are not supposed to be as glossy as paint.

IMHO the stripes like a periodic wipe down with an excellent detailers spray.

The other thing that I learned after my first set of stripes is that you hardly ever get all the bubbles out. Rather than damaging the stripes trying to work every little bit out, be patient. A good 80+ degree day in the sun, and the bubbles magically disappear.

Ask the vinyl manufacturer.

My gut says bad idea to paint over the vinyl.

Off gassing, shrinking, etc would all happen under the clear.

If you really want to clear coat over the strip paint the stripe on

if for some reason you have to change the stripe or just part of it your in trouble if you clear over it Also if you clear over it & you want to or have to sand & buff the clear there is a better chance of sanding through the clear at the stripe now depending on the stipe you could always paint the stripe on then your main color then your clear this is what I did with the 69 barracuda I had

If your clear coat over the vinyl striping, the solvents in the clear coat may cause the stripe to lift when it reacts with the adhesive. An avid hot rodder by me clear coated over some vinyl on his car, it was a disaster.
