I bought a set of aftermarket gauges with an amp gauge in the set. I would like to bypass the factory one and use the new one. Can I just take the wires off the factory amp gauge and and run wires from them to the new gauge?

I would assume this is ok, every car I have owned, I bypass the factory amp by joining the two wires together

Attach the wires from the factory ammeter to the aftermarket one (assuming they long enough), you'll be good to go. I'll be using an aftermarket ammeter in my custom dash (66 Barracuda dash in my 65 wagon), but the ammeter will be in the same space as the factory one.

I will have to lengthen the factory amp gauge wires to go to the aftermarket gauge under the dash. What gauge wire should I use. Would #12 be big enough or should I go #10.

Sounds good. I will get this part of the project done this week and maybe get it fired off this weekend. If anyone has more input on this subject please feel free to add more. Thanks.
