Caliper question

I have a set of 73-76 disk brakes for my conversion. When I got the original parts the calipers were not there. I have since bought new calipers and of course the instructions leave a lot to be desired.
Which way do the plates that hold the calipers in position go on? I don't want to put them on upside down. And where do the rubber bands go?

Do you mean the brackets that mount to the spindle or the pieces that hold the caliper on?The plates are 2 piece with tab holding calipers down but still able to slide with pad wear. The brackets mount behind spindle facing forward. Dave
