Cam selection Lunati Voodoo 10200704 vs other options

I got 380hp create engine with similar cam but roller and 2800 stall.
Even with a single plane and 2.96 gear and 245 60r 15. It's liveable pulls strong between 2000-6000 rpm. Have to drive in 2nd in town for now. But soon as swap gears know it's gonna be a killer combo.

I'm sure with your gear and combo that cam will be fine.

The 704 will work fine with the bolded items. Get the idle tune up correct and move up from there.

Yeah it'll work, but with 28" tall tires like the OP is running I think he's going to be a heck of a lot happier with 3.91's. Running the same cam with 26" tall tires and 3.55's I can say I think he's gonna want more gear. I know my car needs more gear, and the OP will have less rear gear with that combo than I do now because of the tire height difference.

But heck I've only put 10k street miles on the car like that so what do I know.

@273
Oh hell yea that's gonna be a real nice driveable street machine. You kind of need the tall gears with the cam/intake combo.

If you ever get to the heads, also grab the next ratio up rockers! GET THEM VALVES A MOVIN!

Either this winter or next I plan on pulling the engine to paint the engine bay.
I plan on porting Heads, swap intake to rpm airgap and Rhoads lifters. But 1.7 rockers are a good idea I hear the ramps on this cam are on the slow side should nicely together.

If you don't mind setting lash once a year I would go with a small solid cam. I was running the lunati 704 cam and switched to a hughes tight lash solid and picked up over .2 and 4 mph in the 1/4. Hughes cam was 237 and 242 at .050 and .534 in. and .542 ex. on a 108. Lash is .010 and .012. You would never know it was a solid cam. My engine is a 9.8 340 2.02 j heads. 2400 converter and 3.55s.

Do you have a 3500+ converter in the car?

Different animal with more converter.

Tighter converter in the low 2's, agreed, go with the smaller camshaft.

Actually, the 704 is what I have in the 340 in my Duster. :D

My 340 is a '68 that's .060" over, compression is about 9.8:1 with a set of ported 308 heads. Heads flow 264 cfm @ .500" lift and have 2.02/1.60 valves. I run it with a eddy rpm airgap intake, holley 750 DP, and doug's headers into a 2.5" dual exhaust. I have 3.55's in the car now with 26" tall rear tires and an 833 with a 3.09 first gear. My Duster is my daily driver, so, my comments about driveability are based on driving it almost everyday, freeway, traffic, all of it.

So, with that in mind, the 704 is a bit big for a daily driver. Below about 2,200 rpm with any kind of load and you risk lugging the engine, it really prefers to be above 2,200 with any kind of load (uphill, acceleration etc). Things really don't come alive until almost 3k rpm, with that cam and the 340 the car is really a lot happier if you drive it like you stole it. Cruising around town isn't really what it's set up for, so driving it more, let's say responsibly, takes a bit more clutch work on take off and between gears if you're short shifting. It needs more gear out back, and my plan is to go at least 3.91 when I get my T56 installed, although I may even go 4.10 or 4.30. I'd go to 3.91's now if it weren't for my frequent freeway driving. 3.73's with 275/60/15's will actually be like a 3.41 gear ratio compared to my 3.55's and 275/35/18's, so, if you want to run the 704 I'd plan on at least 3.91's. For a street/strip car it probably isn't an issue, but for a frequent driver the 704 is big enough to cause some driveability issues. It's doable, I mean, I do it and it works and I'm not going to downsize the cam. But if I were setting up the build again for a driver I'd probably keep it at a 703 instead. The T56 and gears will solve most of my issues I think, make it easier to take off and still have the overdrive for the freeway.

Here's the 704 at idle, probably around 800 rpm in this video.

Thanks for the correction. I need to exercise my memory some more. :)
