This shield is from sheet steel, and fireplace flue insulation about a half inch (1.2 cm) thick.
The insulation holds to the sheet steel with small sheet metal screws and wide washers
from below. I attached this assembly to the intake using a small bolts with its head welded to the no. one intake tube. The other bolt screws into the top of the large bolt connecting intake and exhaust manifolds. I use a 3/8 inch (roughly 1 cm) thick, cedar carb mounting gasket to lift the carb higher up for access to idle screw.
Carb is nearly at ambient temperature after running motor 30 min. at city speeds.
The drawback is that the bolts will need to be tightened now and then.
