any way to tell condition of a 8 3/4 center chunk? --
what is the difference (visually) between a clutch type vs spring type sure grip?
how much surface rust is allowable on thering gear from sitting?
local supposedly sure grip for sale & I'm looking for pointers before i inspect it , thanks-- Lawrence

You can check it for backlash. Then run a pattern on the gear teeth. That would speak volumes and if it feels rough when you turn it by hand it probably has a bad bearing. A clutch type sure grip is square cut on the end of the housing and a cone type is more rounded.

The cone type SG has 2 windows to look inside and you see big springs. It also uses a single cross shaft holding the spider gears in. The clutch type has 4 windows and no springs. It is a 4 pinion spider so sticking out of the windows is each spider gear pin. If there's any pitting whatsoever I won't re-use gears. Take a piece of scotch brite and see if it comes off easy.
