changing power steering gearbox

Im changing the power steering gearbox in my 76 dodge dart sport and am having difficulty getting the shaft into the steering link. Does the steering column need to be loosened and pulled back or do you just fight with it until it goes in? what is the trick?

are you talking about the coupler between the steering chuck (box) and the column?
if so, drop the column
