63 dart 360/904 1/4 mile dirt track stock car. iirc 3;55's 7&1/4 (welded spiders, surprising it held up! & is way lighter than an 8&3/4). It still has the 55yr old OE torque converter in there & I think something newer/modern would be a good upgrade. what type/brand would you suggest I go with? thank you for your time.

It depends on your cam. The engine makes *** power at *** rpm and you need to make sure you're not slipping because of a loose converter. If a stock one has been working and the engine hasn't changed I would run it or get a new to you rebuilt.

it is a mid/high RPM cam (cant find the specs right offhand) & yes the TC ain't having any issues that I can detect but I was thinking that I might be leaving something on the table

Unless it's slipping probably not. A stock converter is pretty solid at 5000+ rpm.

Back in my “roundy round” days we used Torque converters out of Vega’s for the 355 Chevelle with a Powerglide. We ran a 1/2 mile asphalt track with a 3.08 rear and we ran the powerglide in low with the tranny kick down lever pulled back for increased fluid pressure.

Are you allowed to run a direct drive with a ball valve to allow the trans to engage? No torque convertor...

Actually I have a custom direct drive 904 verter. I was saving it for another 904 where I would plumb the case for a shutoff valve. In the meantime I was thinking there might be a better verter for my current setup. thanks guys. RR

then you want it to stall just below your rpms coming to green flag,...a lock up might be a good idea,..light weight! every body round here runs a 3 speed saginaw with a 7 1/4 3 disc clutch set up in super street dirt class's or a 4 speed muncie with 1-2 removed....DWB
