City Water Filtering Setup

-
George, we’re roughly 5 miles NE of the Elk River landfill. Thankfully we’re upwind of it, but we are concerned about our water quality, naturally. We use those same 5 micron filters as the third stage of filtration:

Downstream (and not shown) is another 5 micron filter before the softener, and then a “final” UV stage before it gets sent around the house. In the kitchen we have an RO system on the cold water.

Since we replaced our well pump I’ve had our water tested three times by different labs (will be taking samples for the 4th this weekend), and we’ve come up clean on each of ‘em.

Oh, and absolutely no taste or flavor to our water from any of the taps.
Jim, going to be a plumber when you retire?

Lordy. All we have is ONE filter on our well but it tastes just fine. lol

We had an issue with our well this past summer, and considering the damage done, not only real but also theoretical, we decided to take no chances with our drinking water and we went all out.

Truth is, I’m thinking of adding even more water treatment in the form of chlorine injection. Still on the fence on this one though.

I don't want chlorine anywhere near our water. I do need a good bit of updates on the plumbing, though. Including moving a water heater...and I ain't no plumber. lol

I’m EXTREMELY concerned about chlorine as well, and we do have a UV light to kill any/all bacteria that may be in our water, but I also like to have redundancies in case of failure.

Still giving it some thought, though….

Wish you were closer so I could help you with the water heater! That’s easy-peasy stuff, as far as I’m concerned.

Well, it's gonna be a little complex. It's behind a wall in our master closet and I want to build a cabinet on the back porch and relocate it there so we (Kitty) can have more closet space. As if she needs more. I've replaced the water heater before. That's in my wheelhouse. But relocating it is a bit beyond me.

The city water here is okay, except it has an extremely high calcium content. I've talked to the city multiple times and was basically told to live with it.

My water is filtered but now my wife is concerned about microplastics. I believe she said the average American consumes the equivalent of a credit card a week.

Chlorine is used as a disinfectant residual.
In a municipal application a residual(Chlorine or Chloramines) is a legal requirement. This helps to ensure nothing in the distribution system will start to grow, after being treated.
UV alters the bacteria DNA, it doesn't kill them. While UV is awesome, turbidity(small particles) MAY shield harmful bac-t from being treated.
What the UV may do is lessen the amount of CL2 needed.
I will take CL2 all day every day. Its been used for over a century.
Redundancy is a good thing with H2O.

I remember you posting pics when all that was going on. You've got a nice place there. Is the neighborhood burdened by an HOA? If not, I'd be tempted to put up a shop plenty big enough to work in, but not overrun the lot.

No HOA fortunately, own the property 100%. Big factor in buying the place was that I would own the lot.

I sure like having that big open useful space.

My neighbor just put up a 24 x 24 x 12 steel building, nice building. But now it has plugged of his access to his back yard.

Name your poison, I like the openness and freedom of access for now. Shade awnings are providing a place to get some work done out of the hot sun and rains in this favorable climate.

Those steel buildings get really hot inside too.

Yeah, we were having an algae issue in our filter since it's a clear filter housing, so I taped over it with black electrical tap and that fixed dat chit. lol
