I know you said not out of a can but I just had some sardines on toasted rounds of french bread, it's a great comfort snack with beer. When I was little my Dad would fix sardines and crackers when we were out on the boat, and give me a few sips of his beer.

Fried fish and hushpuppies.

Any kind of omelette with a side of grits.
