So last night my HP laptop took a crap. The screen just went black with a few vertical colored lines, is this the video card taking a dump? I can build pretty much build anything on a car but computers are totally greek to me. Any idea on the cost for the parts to fix? Thanks, Johnny.

Sounds like the screen took a crap. It's also possible that the ground strap on the screen may have got loose or the ribbon cable that connects the screen to the motherboard worked its way loose.

Unfortunately, laptops don't have replaceable video cards, they use a onboard chip. You can check for the above issues but taking laptops apart is a lesson in patience. See if you can find some disassembly instructions on the 'net.

That sucks. I got this one for the screen so hopefully its something like the cable you mentioned. Its killer watching movies, or at least it was. A buddy of mine manages a Best Buy back in CA so Im gonna call him up and see about the instructions for disassembly.
