Damn right. Gots to be careful. That's why we like to meet at public parking lots and such when buying/selling. But if not, I always tote something.
 
That is why I never give my phone number in the add. The police can trace an e-mail reply to a certain computer. You also get a chance to evaluate the responder without ever giving them any of your contact info.
 
Just remember if they are coming to robe you they are packing to plus they most likely have more then person with them.And usually the bystander gets shot.

I've felt relatively safe going to a well lit area to look at a car (with no cash or credit cards on me). Then going to the DMV and making the deal in front of the notary at the title office. This is of course after taking down the VIN and calling my insurance company to make sure the car is clean.
