Curious about the punch hole in fender tags

Could someone educate me on the purpose for the small, jagged hole that is punched in most, or all of the early fender tags. I don't know if they are on all fender tags or only certain A-body years. They aren't all the same shape punch. Wondered if that indicated differant factories.

Thank you for the info. Do you know if every tag have a punch or imprint? It seems like I have seen one or more tags with no mark when searching online.
But I don't recall for sure, and I don't know what years they might have been.

Some have them & some do not. Some are so faint the paint hides them too.
