I have a 1981 225 /6 with hyd lifters, I was told head is cracked.
Qustion. Is the head different for solid to hyd lifters for oiling.
Do i have to use a head for 1980 and up?
Thanks for any info, I will be at pick a part looking this weekend.

As far as I know, there's no reason you can't use a head from an earlier engine on a later model (hydraulic lifter) slant.

You would, of course, have to use the valve train parts (pushrods, rockers and rocker shaft) from your hydro-lifter engine.

If you use the earlier casting with the 13/16 hex plugs and drool tubes, the only disadvantage is that you have to remove the head if you need to replace a lifter.

Also, if you get a pre-'81 head, be sure to grab the valve cover, too; the shape of the gasket surface changed for '81.

your killing me guys i just recycled a 82 engine and head ....... i may have access to a 83 hydro motor i have a guy wanting to yank the slant for a 440 just depending when we get the shumacker kit in.....
