On my 74 Scamp the rear has been converted to the 70 style, although I dont think the year matters, Im wondering if there is a seal that goes between the body and the extension cap or do ya just bolt them together? Would water not get between the two and into the trunk without a seal?

Yes that's almost what its like plumbers putty on the inside holes by the studs. And I believe it's best to leave them separated when you paint and bolt together after so the paint doesn't fill the crack if that makes sense.

I've got spare extensions from 70 & (2) 71 darts
One of them had a thin black plastic "gasket "
Will dig out & post pic

Gasket is stiff plastic approx. 0.032" thick
they do not cover to the outer edge of extension
there is oem paint on outer edge of gasket (hard to get pic)

probably used to keep extension away from body to drain moisture
only found on one 71 dart both extensions
all extensions have 3 holes for trim screws not shown in pic

I plan to use plastic shim stock to fabricate mine
avail industrial supply house

oops not shown on left gasket extends 3/4 " past C/L of lower mtg stud (by keys d hook) to end of mounting lip sorry

Hope this helps
Thanks FABO
