So I never paid attention to anything with automatics, those weird alien engineered fluid couplers but I have a 727 and I'm trying to identity it but I don't know how the pattern works.

It says H2538334 2683425 on the pan rail.

Can anyone explain how these numbers work?

I think the first set of numbers is the part number. There is also a date code there based on a rotating 10,000 day calendar. But I don't know the date when they started that, or the date they started the next date it started over, or if it has rolled over, again.
I'm sure there are others here with better knowledge of these things.

That transmission, part# 2538334 (according to my Tom Hand book) was used for one year 1966 second number, behind a 383 found either a passenger car or truck.
