Got this 489 w/3:91's pretty cheap - definitely will be rebuilt but was wondering what gives with the teeth marks on the posi unit, how's this happen ? Ring gear looks fine to me, but I'm no expert on these .......

Probably came loose because of the crush sleeve....
Ring gear is date coded...Sure grip is 69 and newer 'cone' style...BTW
 
I would say since it's just the case of the unit, it'd be fine, but you will probably be replacing it anyway ?
 
I have one just like that and I agree, it was the pinion that made contact with it at one time. Mine is now in another setup and has been working fine for years and years. Just rebuild the unit with new ring and pinion ( assuming the ones in there did that) and you will be fine. Being a cone style, and having all that muck around it, I would look very closely at the sure-grip unit before expecting it to work well.
