Got my new 440 in today, and put the distributor in and pulled it back out, when I did the distributor drive gear pulled right out with it. Obviously there is a correct way it goes in, but am not sure what it is. My guess would be get the # 1 piston to TDC and drop the gear in so the rotor is pointing at the # 1 wire. Help me out.

Second issue. I had the motor running, but the distributor had to be really far retarded, and it ran on after I shut it off when I checked the timing it would only run at 10* After TDC, again I am guessing this is because I had the distributor gear in wrong?

With number one cylinder at tdc, the oil pump shaft should be stright front to back, or horizinal, then drop dis. in with rotor pointing to the number one on the cap!

70dusterjohn, thanks for the help, got the gear in right.
